In celebration of the new renovations happening at Calhoun Square, and because summer is the time for block parties, the building's new leasing agent, Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., along with the Independent, are throwing the first annual Uptown Bikes and Bands Block Party, which will take place both in the mall and also on Girard Avenue between Lake and 31st Streets this Saturday. The newly completed pedestrian walkway along Girard Avenue was built to host outdoor events for the community, and this party will be its debut. Bryan Thuney, Dan Israel, and the Brass Kings will provide the tunes and Famous Dave's, Davanni's, Summit beer, and Miller Lite will bring the food and drink. There will also be family-friendly activities, including henna tattooing, caricatures, and temporary tattoos. The highlight of the event will be a motorcycle contest where riders compete in six different categories for prizes ranging from $125 to $150. Contestants can sign up online for $5 or on site for $7 starting at 11 a.m. on the first floor of the mall. See www.uptownblockparty.com for more details.
