Yes, the Fringe is extending its synesthetic tentacles all over the region this weekend, but it's worth remembering that down by the river the Guthrie is opening Vineyard Theatre's production of The Scottsboro Boys. This musical, based on a case involving unjustly accused African American men in the 1930s (an American moment not noted for racial enlightenment), unites the theater hotshots behind such shows as Chicago and Cabaret. It's coming off a hit off-Broadway run, and should probably represent the higher end of that beast known as the contemporary American musical—rife with tunes and energy, a decent dash of storytelling, and presumably a thorough streak of flash. And don't blame the Guthrie for opening the show during Fringe—it presumably took a balancing act to bring it here, given its legs, and even if the Fringe rules your life now, this show runs well into September.
