Last year, Minneapolis became the sister city to Najaf, Iraq, a town less than 100 miles south of Baghdad. Expanding on these efforts of cultural exchange, the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project is sponsoring an art exhibit at the Tarnish and Gold Gallery. "The Art of Conflict: Identity in War and Displacement" brings together different perspectives on war. Artists from Minnesota, Iraq, and across the U.S. have created pieces that express their feelings about the current war in Iraq and explore the impact of the conflict. The defining piece of the exhibit, Middle East Madonna, by New York-based artist James Allen, depicts a woman with a helicopter on her shoulders carrying a baby. Two of the eight Iraqi artists will be present at the show opening as well as several of the American artists. The opening reception is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, July 29. The gallery will also host several events, including a film screening (8 p.m. Saturday, August 14) and a discussion with one of the local artists, Monica Haller (7 p.m. Wednesday, August 11).
