Minneapolis Aquatennial

This huge eight-day festival spans much of Minneapolis and is perhaps one of the most varied festivals of the summer. It starts this Friday with a free block party featuring music by Night Ranger on Nicollet Mall (between Third and Fourth Streets) from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. the Dakota Jazz Club (Nicollet Mall, between 10th and 11th Streets) will be hosting a family-friendly outdoor jazz festival with live music, an instrument petting zoo, and local food vendors (there will also be a family-friendly party in Loring Park on July 21). One of the more popular events is the Star Tribune Beach Bash at Thomas Beach on Lake Calhoun. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 18, guests will be able to take canoe rides, cheer on participants in the milk carton boat races, and marvel at the results of the sand castle competition. Other cool events include the World Wakesurfing Championships (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 22 and 24 on the Mississippi River), the Torchlight Parade (Hennepin Avenue, from the Basilica of Saint Mary to Fifth Street, starting at 8:30 p.m.), and the Target fireworks show (10 p.m. July 24 near the Stone Arch Bridge).
