If you're trying to transition a picky eater out of his Goldfish cracker habit, Little Locavores should provide some inspiration. The History Center is using the local-food movement to teach kids about the state's agricultural heritage. What is a "locavore," you ask? It's a person who eats locally grown food whenever possible. It's the reason new farmers' markets continue to sprout all over the Twin Cities, and it's the reason you feel increasingly guilty buying Kraft Mac & Cheese. At the event, regular museum admission also buys you free food from local chefs such as Seth Bixby Daugherty. Daugherty is a fierce advocate for "real food" in school cafeterias. He will be serving wild rice salad, an entrée with oranges, apples, carrots, and mint that is coming to a northeast Minneapolis high school in the fall. Even if your kid snubs all the green-colored food at the museum, there are historic lawn games to play, cookbooks to make, and bands to watch. Performers include rappers MC/VL, the Walker West Music Academy Student Jazz Ensemble, and School of Rock (cross your fingers for them—School of Rock teaches kids to play in a band with the goal of performing live at events like this one). The Minnesota History Center is partnering with the music-and-food buffs of Gastro Non Grata to put on the event.
