Launched at the Prom Center in 1982 with participants including the Time and Prince (then taking a break from recording 1999), the Minnesota Black Music Awards were only a year younger than the Minnesota Music Awards, a recognition that the scene now centered on a community that would no longer be ignored. After a historic decade and a half—check out DJ IXL scratching with his butt on YouTube—they bid farewell in 1998. Now the MBMA are back, with headliners Mint Condition, Sounds of Blackness, the Ladies of Jazz (featuring Debbie Duncan, Kathleen Johnson, and others), Heiruspecs, the New Congress, and host T. Mychael Rambo celebrating three decades of "the Minneapolis sound"—a funky synth thing so influential that it now just seems like modern pop music. Visit mnblackmusicawards.com for more.
