Tour de Fat 2010

New Belgium reminds us this weekend that its interest in bicycles goes beyond the classic cruiser plastered across its Fat Tire labels. The brewing company gets serious about two-wheeled transportation as its annual Tour de Fat returns to Minneapolis, gifting a gorgeous, tricked-out bike to one lucky convert commuter who will surrender the title to his or her car. The official handing over of the auto will be an onstage spectacle, followed by band-kids-turned-awesome Mucca Pazza. And yes, there will be beer. For $5, New Belgium will supply you a brew or two and give the cash to pro-cycling causes. Don't plan on getting too sloshed to make your way home, though. It's a family-friendly event, beginning with a bike parade. Get there early, and don't forget to dress up. The vaudevillian circus acts sprinkled throughout the day (including the always-popular Yard Dogs) should ease your insecurities about looking out of place. Dovekins add to the eclectic mix with a banjo, mandolin, washboard, spoons, and more. A friendly warning: Organizers could cap admittance if it starts getting too crowded. It's summer, it's Minneapolis, and this is about as inexpensive as it gets. Be on time, or risk being sorry. For more info visit www.newbelgium.com/tour-de-fat.
