Dobet Gnahoré

Just edging into her late 20s, the Ivory Coast singer, percussionist, and dancer Dobet Gnahoré is widely considered an up-and-coming pan-African star who is likely to establish a significant presence on an international scale. With two excellent albums to her credit and a third (Djekpa La You) out this spring, Gnahoré took a major step in that direction earlier this year when she shared a Best Urban/Alternative Performance Grammy with India.Arie for their version of Sade's "Pearls." The song is about the struggles of women throughout Africa, reflecting Gnahoré's social and political concerns, which dominated her lyrics on 2007's Na Afriki (Cumbancha). Singing in eight African languages, she covered massacres, poverty, incest, and polygamy. While some of the subjects are grim, Gnahoré's music is an intoxicating blend of African pop styles, infectious melodies, and her own strong, alluring voice entwining with the warm, lively, percussive guitar work of her husband, Colin Laroche de Féline.
