Growing up in Kansas City, Chris Porter never even considered the possibility of being a comedian. "It seemed like being a king, like something you're chosen to do." He wasn't the only one who found the idea outlandish: When a 19-year-old Porter told his mother he was going to an open mic to try standup, she burst out laughing. "I bought her a giant television 10 years later and she was like, 'Good call.'" A successful stint on Last Comic Standing bumped Porter up to the big leagues, and he's since headlined shows across the country and made multiple appearances on Comedy Central. The best evidence of his amiable act, which is punctuated with sometimes surprisingly dark punchlines, can be found on his standout DVD/CD combo, Screaming from the Cosmos (Stand Up! Records). Catch him all week at Acme, where he's honing material for his follow-up disc. "I'm thinking about calling it Clairvoyant Butthole," Porter says, pausing for maximum ironic effect, "but I'm not positive." 18+.
