30th Annual Hamel Rodeo

Hamel is an area so tiny that it doesn't appear on most maps; it is generally considered an incorporated region of Medina. But this is the location for the Annual Hamel Rodeo, and it has been for the past 30 years. Each summer the town's tiny Main Street (it also has a post office), is flooded with around 17,000 friendly visitors. Throughout the event festival-goers can watch the drama unfold as sportsmen try their best at bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Before the rodeo begins each day, families can enjoy free pony rides. Thursday through Saturday, grownups can continue to celebrate with dance parties at Inn Kahoots. Sunday ends the event with a bang and includes a flea market at the Medina Ballroom and a parade down Main Street. For a complete schedule, visit www.hamelrodeo.org. (Image by AC Johnson Photography)
Thursdays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays. Starts: July 8. Continues through July 11, 2010
