Stand-Up Comedy Slam

You should all be familiar with poetry slam by now: timed rounds of poets judged by randomly selected audience members, eventually whittled down by score until a winner is declared. It gives the poetry an energetic edge and a fine polish, as the poets vie for the top spot in the audience's hearts and on the scoreboard. The Twin Cities' first Stand-Up Comedy Slam re-purposes that formula, pitting local standup talent against one another in a battle of laughs. No doubt there'll be a few stinkers telling Polish jokes, but we're hoping the slam brings out some of the local big hitters, sharpening their delivery and honing their hilarity. If poetry slam is any indication, there'll also be a lot of audience participation (read: hooting, hollering, and occasional heckling) and it'll be fun to see how the comedians handle the feedback—it may be crucial to a winning strategy, since the audience judges control the slammers' scores. In the words of the late Mitch Hedberg, "It's a fight to the finish; that's a good place to end." (Photo by sparetomato)
