One benefit of the monthly Critical Mass bicycle ride out of Loring Park is that it shows how quickly you can bicycle through a city when you take out the cars—and with the BP leak spilling as much oil as Minneapolis uses every day, that possibility looms as both nightmare and daydream. But until trains roll down every highway, we can at least admit that this oil-based economy was as planned as planned gets, and entertain a little counter-planning. Along those lines, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak joins Talking Heads singer David Byrne, as well as Transit for Livable Communities' Steve Clark and writer Jay Walljasper, for a program at the Uptown Theatre called "Cities, Bicycles, and the Future of Getting Around." Byrne did much of the research for Here Lies Love, his new disco opera with Fatboy Slim about Imelda Marcos (elected last month to Philippine Congress), while bicycling around the Philippines, and turned similar experiences across the globe into a recent cycling memoir, The Bicycle Diaries. This meeting of bike minds couldn't be better timed: Named the best bicycling city in America by Bicycling magazine, Minneapolis has just launched the largest bicycle-sharing program in the country, Nice Ride Minnesota (www.niceridemn.org), which allows bike access with the swipe of a credit card, and co-presents the evening with 89.3 the Current.
