Penelope Freeh & Megan Mayer

The Southern Theater pairs Penelope Freeh's physically risky, emotionally intense dance "We'll Survive If We Don't Protect Ourselves" with Megan Mayer's altogether cooler and slyer take on the human predicament. Mayer's "We Tried to Throw the Light" investigates what she terms "the unease and sense of discovering that accompany self-scrutiny." The piece incorporates 1960s foreign films, The Lawrence Welk Show, and a soundtrack that includes selections from a pizza-joint jukebox from the '70s. It also features some of the area's wryest performers—Charles Campbell, Elliott Durko-Lynch, Annie Enneking—plus a bevy of surprise guests. Freeh's work was a big hit at the last Fringe Festival, where dancers donned gorilla masks and dangled from balconies at the Grain Belt Bottling House. This time around she's relying on the Southern's catwalks and deep mystique. Her dynamic, daredevil cast includes Freeh, Christine Maginnis, Eddie Oroyan, and Stephen Schroder.
