Cult Sisters 5

Although this show features work by five female artists, the press release we received playfully warned us not to "expect to see any flower or vagina paintings with this group." Well, thank god. Though based on these ladies' previous works, we were never in any danger of such clichés. British transplant Louisa Greenstock revels in the lowbrow artist movement, painting iconic individuals from pop culture, including sassy lady Lucille Ball. Kara Hendershot's paintings are dreamlike in quality; characters gaze out of windows and relax on front steps as they express emotional states ranging from joyful to somber. J.M. Culver's drawings are somehow sparse yet detailed; her subjects range from playful old men on tire swings to curious little girls. Performance artist Gina Louise, whose past work has included colorful representations of trailer parks, will exhibit as well along with gallery curator Erin Sayer. On Thursday, June 10, there will be a preview reception from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., but the real party features music from the Great Confinement this Saturday, June 12, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
