24-hour BioBlitz

At this epic event, scientists, families, students, and environmentalists will race against the clock to count as many different examples of flora and fauna in the Vermillion highlands and river as they can within 24 hours. Bugs, ferns, mushrooms, birds, fish, and mammals will be accounted for using traps, sonar, lights, and laptops. Now in its sixth year, this event moves to a new location each season and is hosted by the Bell Museum. The number of species counted at each habitat varies, but in the past numbers have ranged from 564 to 1,128. Interested in getting involved, but not by counting things like bats or bugs? Check online for a schedule; participants will be looking for different types of living things at different hours. For more info, visit www.bellmuseum.org/bioblitz or call 612.626.7133. Event runs from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday. (Photo by Zevotron)
