This weekend is your last chance to catch Penumbra's entertaining and masterfully acted production of Gus Edwards's new play. James Craven and Abdul Salaam El Razzac are two men whose lives keep intersecting: in work, in romance, and now, late in life, on a patch of grass and a park bench where they run into each other day after day. The thing is, they truly can't stand one another, and use just about every emotional and verbal weapon at hand to try to bring one another down. The unavoidable fact, of course, is that they're friends of a sort, but they're simply too damned hard and crusty to really admit it. Lou Bellamy directs a show that is hugely funny and smart, while touching the heart only as much as it should in a humbling story about lives with diminished vistas, in which admitting vulnerability feels like drawing the curtain closed for good.
