It's no exaggeration to observe that the African slave trade was one of the most crucial historical factors of the last 500 years, driving a splinter deep into the American psychic eye but also altering the course of history on African shores (we'll throw in colonialism on that score). Cori Thomas's new play, directed by Marion McClinton, concerns a father from Liberia (a nation founded in the 19th century by former American slaves). When his American daughter accompanies him back home for a visit, matters are derailed when a teenaged soldier detains and imprisons them. Family history, civil war, and the deep treads of history are at the forefront here, with an excellent cast featuring Regina Marie Williams and Ansa Akyea. (Photo by Aaron Fenster)
