Escape from Coney Island

Coney Island will always hold an important spot in American history and culture. It was here that the hot dog was invented, as well as the rollercoaster. It was a destination that enabled working-class people to take an affordable excursion into hedonism. Today, many historians believe that Coney Island was the cradle of American pop culture. "Escape from Coney Island" draws inspiration from the area during its peak of popularity, with pieces riffing on cotton candy, amusement park rides, sword swallowers, beach combers, and circus performers spackled with makeup. The group show will feature contributions from eight artists, including works of photography (both surreal and natural), oil paintings, drawings, and more. The opening reception is from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, and includes music from Nice Purse and UltraChorus.
