SOLO: 1x2

Both a documentary and a tribute to the vitality of the Minnesota dance community, SOLO: 1x2 offers a glimpse into the work and working processes of six dancers and their choreographers. Like a good fairy, the McKnight Foundation annually awards six dancers fellowships that allow them to commission solos from any choreographer they choose. Filmmakers Robert C. Hammel, Michele Blanchard, and Caitlin Hammel followed the 2008 awardees through the rigorous and exhilarating experience of making a solo dance. Additional interviews with friends, fellow artists, nationally acclaimed dancers, and dance critics are included, along with intimate glimpses into the lives of these talented artists. Highlights from the rough-cut preview shown last September at the Southern Theater included dancer Laura Selle Virtucio and choreographer Colleen Thomas chatting about marriage with the aid of a rubber chicken, Tamara Nadel working out the subtleties of Bharatanatyam under the direction of her mentors Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, and a crouching Carla Grotting pitching balls with her son. This version is leaner and meaner, well worth a gander if you want to know what goes on behind the moving works you see onstage.
