Technically, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the May 5, 1862, Battle of Puebla, when the Mexican army defeated the French despite great odds against them. In actuality, the day is less about historic wars and more about taking pride in Mexican tradition, culture, and community past, present, and future. During the two-day fest, attendees can watch sports competitions, check out services available in the wellness village, take in cultural performances, and spend family time in the children's area. Highlights include the always-exciting low-rider car show and hydraulic showcase at 4 p.m. Friday, local hip-hop artist/singer Maria Isa later at 7 p.m., and the people's choice salsa contest, where guests can sample and vote for their favorites in the mild, hot, and unique categories. The parade at 10 a.m. Saturday is also not to be missed. It begins at Plato Boulevard and Wabasha Street, continues to Cesar Chavez Street, and ends at Ada Street.
