Iron Bartender

Beginning on the first Sunday of May, Hell's Kitchen is reviving this citywide bartending competition, which was held last year at Bella Notte. The eight-week tournament of mixology skills and social posing will be a great excuse to get one's drink on, innovatively. A roster of 16 teams from local establishments—including the Lyndale Tap Room, Bradstreet Crafthouse, and Town Talk Diner—will be narrowed down to the last duo standing (presumably, everyone else will be fall-down drunk). The setup is ripped from Iron Chef: A secret ingredient will be unveiled before each round, which the bartenders must use as the main substance in a trio of libations (martini, cocktail, and shot). Last year's competition included black tea and balsamic vinegar. It's likely that the ingredients at Hell's Kitchen—a restaurant that puts pears in ham sandwiches and makes bread out of bison meat—should inspire some unusual drinks. As for the spectators, drinks are on special all night, and between rounds there will be amateur mini-competitions. (Photo by TheGiantVermin)
Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 2. Continues through June 20, 2010
