SCUBA Touring Network

SCUBA gives us a look at what's going on in choreographers' minds across the country. This year's artists explore themes of science and fantasy from some mind-boggling perspectives. In "Symptom," Minneapolis-based BodyCartography Project provocateurs Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad attack "the slippage between subjective and objective understanding of the human body." The two are known for investing heady subjects with visceral theatricality. Philadelphia's Megan Mazarick brings "Avatard," which employs B-grade 1950s science fiction, sci-fi theme songs, and video-game soundtracks. Her video vixens, Soul Burner and Tetris, tote laser guns and embody aspects of women in sci-fi media, from Barbarella to Ursula LeGuin. In "cuttlefish," Mazarick uses the protean qualities of this most intelligent invertebrate as a metaphor for human defense mechanisms. Seattle-based troupe locust offer "crushed," a dance/music/video performance work described as a "feverishly physical dissection of cause and effect." The program certainly demonstrates that high-concept dance theater is running rampant across the land, along with lowercase titles. (Photo by Peter Mumford)
