Saburo Teshigawara/KARAS: Miroku

When is a dancing body more than a dancing body? Saburo Teshigawara's physical origami takes the viewer into a mystical realm where extremes of velocity and stillness, fluidity and pulsation transform him, "erasing the body and reaching the dance of the soul," as ecstatic critic Kumiko Murayama described it. A performer who is also recognized as a visual artist, Teshigawara creates his own sets, lighting, and videos. His extraordinary dancing in "Miroku" is enhanced by images of snow falling and a black wall tumbling down, opening into a kind of black hole of eternity where the dancer unites with the universe. He puts on a one-man show of epic proportions. (Photo by Takashi Shikama)
