Shapiro & Smith Dance: Women and Men

The fraught relationships between women and men become athletic dramas as these terrific dancers spiral from personal ordeals to universal ideals. "Bolero" explores physical struggles and the limits of endurance, while "Betty's House" finds artistic director Joanie Smith in the midst of a domestic crisis or two. If all this sounds super serious, rest assured that Smith injects her dynamic choreography with plenty of wit. The program also includes a welcome reprise of "Medea Medea," a seriocomic version of the ancient Greek melodrama, and "Moonlight," a work of swoon-worthy romantic lyricism to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Guest artists include Ananya Chatterjea (as one of the Medeas) and former José Limon dancers Carl Flink and Emilie Plauche Flink—life partners who haven't danced together in over a decade.
