Literary Death Match

Don't worry: No authors will be harmed in this battle of words and stories (at least not physically). The brainchild of Brooklyn-based Opium Magazine, Literary Death Match pits award-winning authors against each other in a battle judged by a celebrity panel, who also come ready to sling a heavy dose of wit. To raise funds for the nonprofit magazine, the popular mash-up is traveling to 12 cities over 27 days in a literary blitzkrieg. But despite the tour being national, the Minneapolis event is very local. Competing tonight will be John Jodzio (author of the absurdly funny If You Lived Here You'd Already Be Home), poet Darci Schummer, Brian Beatty (McSweeney's), and John Gordon. These four will be judged by talented writers in their own right, including hip-hop poet Dessa from Doomtree, Damaged Goods author and quizmaster Rob Callahan, and Dennis Cass. There will be socializing before and after the battle, followed by a 10 p.m. screening of the Mel Gibson/Tina Turner classic, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. (Photo by boltron)
