Booker T. Jones

This great double bill with wicked southern exposure features Hammond B3 master Booker T. Jones, iconic leader of the fabulous Stax house band Booker T. and the MGs, and JJ Grey, leader of north Florida swamp rockers Mofro. During Stax's heyday as Memphis's soul powerhouse, the MGs backed the likes of Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Wilson Pickett, also issuing their own instrumental hits, most notably "Green Onions." Booker's 2009 solo album, Potato Hole (Anti-), his first in two decades, won a Grammy. Backed by the Drive-By Truckers and guitarist Neil Young, PH is centered on Booker's soulful organ, but also rocks a lot harder than they ever did at Stax, especially on the grungy opener "Pound It Out." Grey's songs for Mofro often have chronicled the disappearance of Cracker culture, vividly capturing regional aesthetics, sometimes with Faulkneresque overtones. This rare solo performance will feature Grey on acoustic guitar and harmonica. 18+. (Photo by Gary Copelander)
