St. Patrick's Day Parade

Minneapolis's first downtown St. Patrick's Day parade was in 1969. It was a humble yet rowdy gathering and featured one float, two bars, and some Minnesota Vikings on motorcycles. Oh, how times have changed. This year's event will be huge, and though it is family-friendly, for some adults it also kicks off a big night of barhopping. Nearby pubs—Irish or not—will be popular destinations before and after the march, and if you're super lucky you might even snag a nice spot to watch the parade indoors. For more info, visit www.mplsstpats.org or call 763.234.7111. Free. 6:30 p.m. The route travels Nicollet Mall from 13th to 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis. (Photo by Valerie Everett)
