Women with Vision: Film Highlight

The Walker presents its 17th-annual festival honoring women filmmakers around the world. The series opens Friday with the premiere of French filmmaker Claire Denis's sublime 35 Shots of Rum (7:30 p.m.), a soothingly quiet film that conveys the easy and frequently nonverbal intimacy between a widowed father, Lionel (Alex Descas), and his university-student daughter, Joséphine (Mati Diop). The film is Denis's warmest, most radiant work, honoring a family of two's extreme closeness while suggesting its potential for suffocation. Other highlights this week: the premiere of The Runaways (Saturday at 7:30 p.m.), directed by Floria Sigismondi, the story of the meteoric 1970s girl group of the same name, starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie; and a showcase from Women in Film & Television International of festival-worthy short films (Sunday at 1 p.m.). Later in the festival, visiting filmmaker Deborah Stratman will introduce the premiere of O'er the Land (Thursday, March 18, at 7:30; free), her award-winning experimental documentary that explores our country's concept of manifest destiny by filming gun shows, war reenactments, motor home travelers, and more. Minnesota filmmakers are also represented during the series, including documentary screenings on Saturday, March 20, of Pride of Lions, a shocking look at Sierra Leone's brutal 11-year civil war by Louise and John Woehrle, and Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story, directed by Melody Gilbert. (Visit www.walkerart.org for more information on films and show times during the festival.)
