George Balanchine was the most influential, and arguably the greatest, ballet choreographer of the 20th century. For nearly three decades, Suzanne Farrell was his muse. He not only created many roles for her, but a whole style of dancing that took classical ballet in the direction of risk, speed, complexity, and new poetics. Balanchine both modernized ballet and took it back to its Russian classical roots. Now Farrell heads a company that seeks to dance Balanchine with the authenticity she brought to his work. Friday night's program offers a range of the master's repertory, including an excerpt from "Divertimento 15," his homage to 18th-century court dances to music by Mozart, and his witty, streamlined "Agon" (music by Stravinsky), a work that honors the sleekness and athleticism Balanchine so admired in American dancers. The Saturday matinee features famous Balanchine duets, with onstage narration by Farrell. You can't get much closer than that to the source of Mr. B's genius. (Photo by Paul Kolnik)
