My Antonia

Willa Cather's tale of life and unrequited love on the prairie is still capable of evoking all manner of yearning and shades of bygone history. Allison Moore's adaptation, directed by Michael Robins, stays close to its source while painting its picture of life under a big sky as seen by Jim, who can never quite shake his adoration for the earthy and earnest immigrant Antonia. Katie Guentzel plays the title role with dashes of wide-eyed wonder, stubborn pig-headedness, and, ultimately, a Zen-like awareness of the spacious expanse of her character's days (the final scene, between her and Brian Goranson's grown-up narrator, lands with elegant force). Illusion's production stays faithful to its source, and amounts to a warm, velvety meditation. (Image by Lauren B. Photography)
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: Feb. 19. Continues through March 20, 2010
