Morgan Thorson, Low: Heaven

Morgan Thorson's "Heaven," an ensemble dance with vocals, explores ritual ecstasy from various angles: social, sacred, subversive. This dancing-in-tongues experience was described in Dance Magazine as "... a sacred landscape rich with contradictions, from wild abandon to control and conformity, from the ecstatic to the contemplative, and finally from individual expression to the collective power of a congregation." After a national tour, "Heaven" returns in triumph to the place that commissioned and shepherded it through its early stages, the Walker Art Center. Thorson's choreographic powers have evolved through a number of diverse projects, from aggressively abstract dances to theatrical works about social class and gender. By joining forces with the music group Low, Thorson and her stellar troupe of performers (Karen Sherman! Jessica Cressey! And that's just for starters) take us to a firmament of provocative music and dance. (Photo by Cameron Wittig)
