History of Hip: No More Wire Hangers! A Brief History of Camp

Camp can mean different things to different people. To some it is garish and repellent, to some it is hilarious and over-the-top, and to others it is maddeningly cliché. Is it political? Is it good or bad for gay culture to be linked to camp? Does it perpetuate stereotypes? Regardless of how individuals feel about the phenomenon, its influences have been far-reaching for decades, thriving in just about every facet of popular culture. Tonight at the Turf Club, art historian Ross K. Elfline will explore the wild world of camp in art and film, from Valley of the Dolls to John Waters flicks. Local artist Jaime Carrera will also discuss how camp performance informs his work. 21+. (Photo by Rick Harris)
