G. Love and Special Sauce

More About

The natural affinity between blues and hip hop has been surprisingly neglected—at least outside northern Mississippi and Philadelphia, the latter thanks to a juggernaut named Garrett Dutton. As G. Love, he and his partners in spicy condiments have come up with tasty summits of the rural and urban cousins, while ranging even farther afield for added inspiration, from Philly soul (naturally) to psychedelia, rock steady, funk, and Crescent City second-line rhythms. All that and more infiltrated G.'s last album, 2008's Superhero Brother (Brushfire), which juggled party anthems and political ruminations. Since then, the perpetually touring G. recorded a live album in Australia, but it isn't available stateside. This gives us all the more reason to sample his Special Sauce, although no Costanza double-dipping allowed. Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad also perform. 18+. (Photo by Autumn de Wilde)
