The characters in Jon Reischl's paintings may indeed be odd, but they are also human and intriguing. They are people at a crossroads of life, perhaps struggling with a conflict or identity crisis, but beautiful nonetheless. The paintings are dreamlike in quality. One image shows a woman who looks as though she could wash away should the blue sky above her suddenly begin to rain; in another piece a blurred man is consumed by a fire that rises up his back. Another work features a woman with a broken-down mechanical device for a head. There's a pleasant mix of sadness, humor, and hope in each, and the paintings somehow manage to be as colorful as they are transparent. The opening party will feature live music from the Pines—for whom Reischl has designed several album covers—from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 6.
