Violet

Theater Latte Da's Peter Rothstein (director) and Denise Prosek (musical director) join forces—as they often do, nearly always offering inventive and assured takes on musical theater. This time out they tackle a show about a young woman from the South during the early days of the Civil Rights movement; terribly scarred from an accident during her youth, she travels in hopes of being healed by a televangelist, along the way meeting a pair of soldiers and confidantes. Violet occupies an intersection of race, sex, beauty, and tenuous threads of redemption—set to a score by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change) that weaves threads of R&B, rock, and gospel.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through March 21, 2010
