The New Frugality

As MPR's Chris Farrell, author of The New Frugality, knows, it all starts with one bad night. Drunk on the allure of credit, you wake up hungover and blurry-eyed, unable to pull your arm from beneath the ugly form lying beside you: debt. Whether it was the goggles of hope, excitement, greed, or survival that led you to fall for credit's sleazy one-liners, you are screwed. What's worse, debt smells like last night's keg beer. It is this seduction that will be discussed at tonight's talk, titled "The New Frugality." In his new book, Farrell discusses the endless bad romance between Americans and debt, as well as the ways in which we can clean up our acts and stop making the same mistakes over and over again. Joining Farrell will be wine and food critic Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl, Kiplinger's Personal Finance deputy editor Janet Bodnar, and Kata McGuire, author of an award-winning personal-finance column for the Star Tribune. The cast of experts will offer advice on raising your financial standards through sustainability, "thinking single," and eating and drinking well on any budget. Regardless of your past transgressions, Farrell and company insist that it is possible to improve your relationship with money and never spend another morning with a hideous and hopeless debt.
