Midnight Muse Review: Mardi Gras Mayhem

Despite its distance from Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras Mayhem, hosted by the Midnight Muse Revue, manages to retain the holiday's debauchery and wild spirit while avoiding the stereotypical flinging of plastic beads. The ladies and gentleman of the Revue are a step—perhaps even a whole floor—above that. Burlesque dancers with names like Musette, the Mistress of Mischief, and Giza Sangria, the Exotic Flower of Dance, will take the stage, as will belly dancers, musicians, and Oops! The Entertainer, a performer of dangerous, wince-inducing sideshow acts. Here, aerial performer Zyra battles gravity while executing circus acrobatics suspended above the stage. Mardi Gras, of course, isn't simply about the spectacle: Attendees tending toward participation can play grown-up carnival games like Three-Legged Ring Toss and Pin the Tail on the Fanny (though not the British fanny, it should be noted). Lady Magpie will be on hand for palm and tarot card readings, and the truly nervy (or intoxicated) can take to the stage themselves to compete in the Minneapolis Shimmy Shake Down.
