Victorian Poetry Slam

Anybody can send a cheesy, pun-addled Valentine's Day card declaring their love for someone special, or select Sweetheart candies proclaiming "Be Mine." And while Hallmark and hardened, pastel-colored sugar are great for 15-year-olds, there are much classier grown-up options to consider. For instance, how about an evening celebrating the prudish, antiquated Victorian age at the James J. Hill House? In what is a petticoated Valentine's Day tradition, local actors Craig Johnson, Laura Salveson, and Ann Daly will put on Victorian costumes and recite poems by classic authors including Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and everybody's favorite shut-in, Emily Dickinson. Following the lively readings, attendees will be treated to tours of the landmark home and light refreshments. It's not a typical way of celebrating love and devotion, but do you really want another heart-shaped box of stale Russell Stover chocolates? Call to RSVP. (Photo by rachaelvoorhees)
