Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão's all-male company strips away the machismo of hip hop, pares it down, then allows it to morph into something new and strange. The evening-length "H3" contains infinite varieties of locomotion, commotion, compositional savvy, and pure dance invention. Nine superb dancers perform sly and sensual duets with elements of contact improvisation. They move backwards across a court in what looks like retrograde basketball and pretzel themselves in hyperbolic folk dances. As one critic put it, "Beltrão has pulled apart the complex preparations, acrobatic moves, body isolations, and poses of hip hop to create a dancer without swagger." Yes, but with plenty of thrilling and artful moves. (Photo by Anna van Kooij)
