Earning a well-deserved spot on the list of the previous century's nightmares is the horrific trench warfare of World War I, which featured galactic pointlessness, carnage, vigorously inhuman conditions, and spurts of lethal chaos on the heels of long periods of confused inactivity. So Rotterdam's Hotel Modern decides to make a show about it, and why not—one of the specialties of our species, after all, is our inventive creativity in finding ways of killing one another. Hotel Modern constructs scale models of this particular hell, which are then projected onto a big screen in real time. You'll see a live show, in other words, about bygone horrors, done in miniature then writ large. Color, vividness, little lives lost to the big groan of history: Let us remember, and trip out.
