History of Hip: Yesterday's Tomorrow's

The Minnesota Historical Society's History of Hip series returns to the Turf Club's basement Clown Lounge (it's not as terrifying as it sounds) with Yesterday's Tomorrows. Historian Brian Horrigan will join blogger Matt Novak, whose paleofuture.org chronicles vintage visions of the future, to discuss science fiction's absurd and inspired predictions for the present era, and also to consider the genre's future. Such a tangle of tenses might require an elucidating drink from the Clown Lounge bar. (Make it a double if you plan to dull the pain of the robot-controlled society that never was.) The History of Hip investigates how and why hipness comes to be; the series continues in March with an exploration of camp, and in April denim's trajectory from working-class uniform to fashion staple will be mapped. 21+.
