For Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad, co-directors of the Body Cartography Project, movement and politics make perfectly compatible bedfellows. "1/2 Life" covers the Pacific Rim and its discontents, connecting nuclear super power the U.S.A. to atomic-bomb-devastated Japan and nuclear-free New Zealand. Bieringa and Ramstad locate the body amidst a world of scientific research, data, and control gone wrong. The work, sponsored by the University of Minnesota Institute for Advanced Study, includes music by Zeena Parkins, visuals by Emmett Ramstad, and guest performances by Tamami Yamada and physicist Bryce Beverlin II. A segment performed as a work-in-progress at the Bryant-Lake Bowl last year revealed brainy Beverlin as a mesmerizing performer and Bieringa and Ramstad as dynamic delvers into the scientific mysteries of our time. Friday's performance features a post-show Q&A.
