While many people across the country hold up their fists in anger against the winter months, Minnesotans enthusiastically come together to celebrate them at the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. This huge festival features a million different things to do, including art shows, barhopping, sporting events, parades, live music, and more. Though the event officially kicks off this Thursday with the royal coronation at RiverCentre (175 W. Kellogg Blvd.) and the ice-carving competition beginning 9 a.m. in Rice Park (109 W. Fourth St.), things really pick up on Friday when spectacle abounds, including the snow-sculpture competition beginning at 9 a.m. at the State Fairgrounds (1265 Snelling Ave.) and the Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade down John Ireland Boulevard from the James J. Hill House to the State Capitol. This Saturday will feature the Beer Dabbler Festival (see Saturday's A-List). Other happenings of note include the Crispin Iceball Game, a snowy baseball game at Midway Stadium (1771 Energy Park Dr.) where sports enthusiasts can enjoy alcoholic cider while watching athletes play for Second Harvest Heartland on Saturday, January 30; an ongoing broomball competition over at the Landmark Center ice rink (75 W. Fifth St.) January 22 through 29; and an ongoing talent show at various locations. For a complete schedule visit www.winter-carnival.com or call 651.223.4700 for more info. (Photo by Tom Maloney)
