Murzik

The genre name that seems to come up most frequently where Murzik are concerned is "dark folk", a phrase halfway between evocative and generic. You can sort of picture a band that trades in a bleak, eerie brand of roots music from that term, but to get the real idea, you'll have to dig further and really listen: Murzik contain the almost mystically-brooding sounds of Eastern and continental Europe, deepest North-Americana and all reaches of cold-weathered country. Last year's Into the Darkness is appropriately-titled, an album that finds beauty in despair -- and vice-versa -- to an extent that it'd make an ideal alternate score for Altman's classic Leonard Cohen-soundtracked bleak winter Western McCabe & Mrs. Miller.
