Is a perfect world a more technologically advanced world? Why do we often associate technology with the future and with utopia? Though these questions are prompted in "A Perfect World," there's definitely a hint of sarcasm in the title of this dual photography show at IFP. In Kristine Heykants's series, titled "Media Stories," the artist employs photographic techniques similiar to those used in advertising for high-end fashion. The women in her pieces live in a world of intense colors and minute aesthetic details, a world where greater technology means that an ever-present media seeks to dictate lifestyle, leaving the consumer feeling more isolated. Evan Baden pushes things a bit further in his series, "Illuminati," which captures youthful subjects lit by the blue screens of their laptops, iPods, and cell phones. Are they isolated or more connected because of these communication advances? What are the greater implications of a world where a private photograph, conversation, or reflection is also voyeuristically available for everyone online to see? The opening reception for this intriguing exhibit is from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 22.
