Verse and Converse: Dancers Who Write

The New Year promises a new installment of Todd Boss's ongoing "Verse and Converse" series at Nina's Coffee Café, with a focus on writers who have also enjoyed long careers as dancers, choreographers, and educators. Each individual has always found ways to creatively pair her interest in the written word with the many possibilities for expression onstage and in the classroom, but this event will place emphasis on words themselves, realized through poetry and prose. The first in a series of three evenings, tonight features co-curators Rebecca Frost and Linda Shapiro, as well as Mary Easter, reading from their original works. Frost provides selections from her creative nonfiction manuscript, Approaching Colossus, a searing reflection on her experiences with her brother's painful life and death, while Easter will offer excerpts from her memoir. Shapiro's short works include a witty and sometimes sobering list, "Some Things I Know About Dance," which features observations about the pitfalls of vanity, dealing with constant pain, and the few luxuries of an otherwise austere lifestyle.
