With a name that references pistol whippin' and partyin' (not to mention waddling arctic creatures), it's tricky to guess what sounds might come out of this band: Thrash metal? Cowpunk? Nature sounds of the frozen, squealing variety? Somewhat surprisingly, the Pistol Whippin' Party Penguins are actually a jaunty little bluegrass band, like a tamer and more melodic version of Duluth's Trampled by Turtles. Which makes the cozy confines of the Red Stag a perfect location for their set tonight—what better way to warm up on a bleak January evening than surrounded by the sounds of fiddles and banjos, sipping cocktails and snacking on some of the Red Stag's tasty late-night treats?
