Dancing at Lughnasa

Last year Tracey Maloney and Stacia Rice seemed to be shadowing one another in terms of weirdly serendipitous parallel performances. Okay, fine, Maloney played Sonya in Ten Thousand Things' Dostoyevsky adaptation Raskol, while Rice played the same role at the same time in the Jungle's Crime and Punishment. These things happen. But then later in the year, Maloney returned to TTT while Rice worked at Park Square—both playing Desdemona in Othello. Now they appear together in Brian Friel's memory play about five sisters in an Irish village in the 1930s; the work snagged Friel a Tony in 1992, and this Torch Theater show promises to shore up an Upper Midwest appreciation of his work after recent notable Guthrie productions. And for Maloney and Rice, perhaps 2010 beckons: simultaneous Cordelias? Dueling Maggie the Cats? The mind reels. (Photo by Ann Marsden)
