Kwanzaa Celebration

Celebrated worldwide between December 26 and January 1, Kwanzaa began as a pan-African holiday marking periods of good harvest. Today, the event honors family, culture, and community. This Saturday families can spend the day enjoying each other in addition to performances and treats from local artists at Midtown Global Market. The opening ceremony will be led by WCCO-TV's Reg Chapman, who will give a brief history and overview of Kwanzaa, followed by the lighting of the Kinara candles. Throughout the rest of the day, families can enjoy jazz music by Barbara LaSeur, storytelling and spoken word from Nothando Zulu and the Black Story Tellers Alliance, and a performance by Voice of Culture African Drum and Dance Co. In addition to these events there will be stations with children's activities, and a Kwanzaa trivia contest.
Sat., Dec. 26, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 2009
