All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914

Theater Latté Da and the vocal ensemble Cantus return to the stage with a work that brings a sublime, shimmering memory to the human tales we contemplate this time of year. Based on a true story of Christmas at the Western Front in 1914, All Is Calm draws upon documents, recollections, and the era's music to depict a night when German and American soldiers put down their weapons, joined one another in song, and generally recognized the spirit of light and hope that resides in each of us, no matter our ostensible differences. Yes, presumably they returned to slaughtering one another after the improvised truce elapsed; that is the dark, almost impenetrable side to our nature. But hope and love win out, one can wish, and perhaps those murky shadows exist in order for us to witness the contrast when the light breaks through. (Photo by Rick Spaulding)
